Paws Abilities is holding a Top Dog (Touch Our Pets) assessment for potential therapy dogs and handlers. This is to be held on Wednesday 10th August at the Paws Abilities training grounds at 1:00 pm.

Dogs need to be healthy, well groomed, social, well mannered and non-reactive. Other requirements are dogs should have reasonable leash manners, a gentle nature, non-touch sensitivity and dogs should not be sound sensitive. Ideal dogs are patient with a “laid back” personality. Dogs with an aggressive nature or who are nervous or defensive are not suitable for this work. Dogs who have been trained in protection work are unfortunately also not suitable for this kind of work.
Real life situations are set up to ascertain and access each individual dog and handlers suitability viz temperament and social skills etc.
The organisation Touch Our Pets is run by a dedicated group of volunteers and their dogs and do a sterling job visiting institutions, schools, old age homes, hospitals and other places in a therapeutic environment.
